Brown’s Open Curriculum

Unlike most of the other universities, where all students have to complete a mandatory set of core courses, Brown University has implemented a personalized course of study which is called the Open Curriculum. This offers the possibility to choose the courses you want to take and become the architect of your education.

Instead of the demanding efforts put into the fixed courses, students can explore more academic areas. You might still have questions like “What will be my major?” or “How will I graduate?”, so here are the answers. Brown University does not have majors. Instead, Brown offers over 80 ‘concentration’ paths, where you will focus on a specific area. You have the full list here. Students have to decide upon their area of concentration in the fourth semester. This Ivy League doesn’t have a required number of credits in order to graduate, but a student needs to complete a total of 30 courses. Moreover, all the paths lead to a bachelor degree in arts or science.

Our goal is a high one — that each and every one of our students is engaged, empowered and transformed by their education. What’s unique about Brown is that we elevate the role of students in achieving that goal as active participants in framing their own education.
